My thoughts on the book:

Have you ever received an award given specifically to you honoring a strong personal attribute? It likely felt empowering. You felt encouraged to have been recognized, and you were challenged to hone the quality in yourself that you never fully noticed before. In it’s simplest form, this is Strengths-Based Psychology.

  1. Strategic
  2. Ideation
  3. Adaptability
  4. Input
  5. Connectedness

These are my top five qualities–my personal strengths–the things that come so natural to me that I never recognized them in myself until someone else did first.

Understanding your wiring is key to maintaining mental health. Many live lives full of stress, worry, and irritation unaware of the underlying mental illnesses that are poisoning the waterhole. It is extremely beneficial to recognize the negative presuppositions that pull you under, but it is lastingly fulfilling to focus instead on the positive attributes that make you you. Those with mental illness too often lose sight of what makes them unique, valuable, and worthy to be loved and appreciated. They dwell too heavily on the negatives and not enough on the positives. Bestselling book, StrengthsFinder 2.0 is a fantastic place to start for those journeying back to self-appreciation.

Conceptualized by the “Father of Strengths-Based Psychology,” a newly purchased book comes with a code as well as an invitation to create an account online. There you can take the StrengthsFinder test, answering questions that will decipher your top five strengths. Once you have your results, in addition to defining each personal attribute, the book offers ideas for action and tips on how to best work with others. And if you are overwhelmed by the thought of reading, breathe deep; there is no need to read it front to back. Pick through the pages to just look at your strengths and the strengths of your loved ones.

It is highly beneficial to explore your strengths and how you are uniquely and wonderfully wired. Focus less on where you’ve been and more on where you’re going. Focus less on what holds you down and more on who you are. I strongly urge: take the StrengthsFinder test.
